Daily Devotionals
Our Daily Bread provides free daily devotionals in a variety of ways. The most common way is the quarterly booklets that are available for free from Churches all over the country and can be requested at no charge from their website. For a donation of any amount, they will send you a booklet ever month with additional material. They also have a smart phone app, an email subscription, and the daily devotionals are available on their website, Facebook, and Instagram.
This classic devotional from Oswald Chambers was released in 1925, 8 years after the author's death in 1917 and has remained in publication since. This popular devotional is now under the umbrella of the Our Daily Bread publication team and like their site listed above, there is a website with a email subscription option to allow you free access to the material. You can also purchase the smart phone app for a small fee and the devotional is available for purchase as a physical book and E-book.
Charles Spurgeon
The Morning and Evening devotional was originally published in 1866, this fact not only shows how the material how stood the test of time but also puts the text into the public domain. This allows me to link you to a free PDF copy of the book from the Monergism website. You can still purchase the work as a physical book and E-book, but several publishers have also released versions with updated language to make it more readable for us today. The name says it all, for every day of the year you get a short devotional in the morning and a second devotional for the evening. You can follow it as design with two devotionals a day or I have heard of individuals reading the morning section in the first year and the evening section in the second year to get 2 years out of this devotional.
Faith's Checkbook was published in 1888, and once again is public domain and you can gain a free copy of the book in PDF form from the Monergism website. In the preface, Mr. Spurgeon writes,
"For long years several thousands of God's people have read my MORNING BY MORNING and EVENING BY EVENING, and many of them have been good enough to write me, and acknowledge the benefit of such a perusal. I hope this little book will not interfere with those volumes. These daily portions are gathered from a more varied range of topics, and are all the more profitable because they deal with doctrine, experience, practice, and everything else. This is a sweetmeat of promise only, and it must not interfere with the fuller meals: nay, rather, I hope it will excite a desire for them."
This does not change the fact that the devotions in this little book are much shorter and can be used as a mid-day refresher to draw our minds back to the Lord or maybe as a starting point for someone who is just beginning to work a devotional into their daily routine.
Robert Hawker
The Poor Man's Morning and Evening Portions
The description below is from Dr. Joel R. Beeke and I can think of no better words to describe this volume. It is a volume available for no cost at the Monergism website.
"The Poor Man’s Morning and Evening Portions by Robert Hawker (1753–1827) is a great devotional classic that received its unique name because it was originally published in small “penny” portions so as to be affordable to the poor. Running through numerous editions in the nineteenth century, these devotionals have served as spiritual food and drink for thousands. Hawker excels in Christ-centered, practical divinity. He has been taught by the Spirit how to find Christ in the Scriptures, as well as how to present Him amiably to hungry sinners in search of daily communion with a personal Redeemer. For the genuine Christian, here is daily devotional writing at its best—warmly Christ-centered, eminently practical, personally searching. Unlike most other daily devotional books of Reformed persuasion that consist of fragmented extracts, The Poor Man’s Morning and Evening Portions was composed expressly for such use. You will feel the difference immediately. Each of these 730 devotional portions is complete in itself and speaks directly to you, compelling you to hold soliloquy with your own soul. Read this volume daily; let Hawker bring the Word of God close to your conscience. Pray for the Spirit to apply these short, savory devotions to your daily and eternal gain." --Joel R. Beeke, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan
William Gurnall
The Christian in Complete Armour
The Christian in Complete Armour by William Gurnall can be read in small sections, around 5 pages a day, 5 days a week. The quotes below show the magnitude of this work. I have put together a reading plan for both the PDF and physical copies of this work. At the top of the reading plan you will have links to purchase this work in physical form or a link to the PDF download.
‘If I might read only one book beside the Bible, I would choose The Christian in Complete Armour.’ — JOHN NEWTON
‘Gurnall’s work is peerless and priceless; every line is full of wisdom; every sentence is suggestive. The whole book has been preached over scores of times, and is, in our judgment, the best thought-breeder in all our library.’ — C.H. SPURGEON
‘You will often find in a line and a half some great truth, put so concisely, and yet so fully, that you really marvel how so much thought could be got into so few words.’ — J.C. RYLE
